United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has informed Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russia’s military operation in Ukraine violates international law. Guterres delivered this message during their meeting at the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia.
In a statement, the UN chief’s spokesperson said Guterres reiterated his stance multiple times, emphasizing that “Russia’s assault on Ukraine contravenes the UN Charter and international law.” He reaffirmed his support for a “just peace” based on international legal standards.
Guterres also stressed to Putin the importance of “freedom of navigation in the Black Sea,” describing it as vital for maintaining stability in global food and energy supplies. The region is essential for Ukraine’s trade, especially its grain exports, which have been disrupted since Russia’s military campaign began in February 2022.
The statement noted Guterres’ continued support for negotiations aimed at resolving these issues, particularly commending Turkey’s role in mediation efforts.
