RIYADH / UNITED NATIONS — Saudi Arabia has firmly ruled out any normalization of diplomatic relations with Israel unless a fully sovereign Palestinian state is established, dashing Western hopes for near-term regional peace amid escalating violence in Gaza.
Speaking at the United Nations, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud declared that Riyadh’s position on normalization remains unchanged, reiterating that Palestinian statehood is a non-negotiable prerequisite for formal ties with Israel.
“For the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, normalization with Israel can only come through the establishment of a Palestinian state,” Prince Faisal said during his speech.
“Peace and regional integration cannot happen unless the Palestinian people are granted their legitimate right to self-determination.”
The Saudi statement comes at a time when international calls for Palestinian statehood are growing louder. Just days ago, France announced its intention to formally recognize the State of Palestine at the upcoming UN General Assembly in September — a diplomatic pivot that has intensified pressure on Israel’s Western allies to follow suit.
Saudi Arabia’s refusal to engage in normalization talks while Gaza remains under bombardment also casts further doubt on past efforts—most notably the Abraham Accords championed by former U.S. President Donald Trump—to draw the Kingdom into broader Arab-Israeli agreements.
“There is no credibility to talk about normalization amid ongoing death, destruction, and human suffering in Gaza,” Prince Faisal said bluntly
