SCO Secretary General Nurlan Yermekbayev to Visit Pakistan on April 17-18
Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Nurlan Yermekbayev, is scheduled to arrive in Pakistan for a two-day official visit from April 17 to 18, following an invitation extended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar.
Leading a delegation from the SCO Secretariat based in Beijing, the Secretary General will hold meetings with several senior Pakistani officials. These include discussions with the Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Commerce, and the Foreign Secretary, aimed at enhancing Pakistan’s cooperation within the SCO framework.
During his stay, Mr. Yermekbayev will visit the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI). He will also deliver a speech at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) and interact with entrepreneurs, media representatives, and business stakeholders to explore further avenues of collaboration.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is recognized as the largest regional multilateral organization in the world, encompassing 10 member states. With a population of 3.4 billion people (around 42% of the global population) and a landmass of 36 million square kilometers, the SCO commands a combined GDP of $24.67 trillion, representing 25% of the world economy.
Pakistan considers its membership in the SCO a strategic opportunity to strengthen ties with regional partners, enhance economic integration, and promote collective security and stability in the region.
The visit of the SCO Secretary General is seen as a key moment for Pakistan to showcase its vision for greater connectivity and inclusive development across the SCO member states. It will also highlight Pakistan’s role in contributing to regional peace, prosperity, and multilateral dialogue.
