*Paris, France* – In a remarkable display of perseverance and creativity, Pakistani artist Barkaat unveiled his solo painting exhibition titled *“Silent Horizons – A Journey through Brush and Soul”* at Pakistan House in Paris. The exhibition, attended by diplomats, art enthusiasts, and individuals from diverse backgrounds, showcased the powerful intersection of disability and artistic expression.
Pakistan’s Ambassador to France, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, highlighted that *Silent Horizons* was not merely an exhibition, but a narrative of triumph over adversity. Barkaat, who was left paralyzed and aphasic after a life-altering accident 16 years ago, used painting as a medium to rediscover his voice. His artworks reflect his resilience, with the ambassador noting that Barkaat’s story exemplifies how disability can become a crucible for talent.
Barkaat’s journey is notable for his academic accomplishments, including a Bachelor of Fine Arts and an M.Phil. in Visual Arts, with his thesis focusing on disability. His contributions have helped solidify the Disability Arts Movement in Pakistan, advocating for the inclusion of individuals with special needs through creative empowerment.
A special discussion was held with Dr. Arshia Ahmad, a neurologist and Barkaat’s sister, who was instrumental in his recovery and artistic development. Her insights highlighted both the medical and social challenges overcome through his artistic journey. Chairperson of UNESCO’s Executive Board, Ms. Vera Lacoeuilhe, commended Barkaat’s achievements and stressed the importance of recognizing the role of art in overcoming adversity.
Attendees expressed admiration for Barkaat’s resilience and his thought-provoking artworks, leaving the event inspired by his incredible story of survival and creativity.
