Opposition parties in South Korea have officially filed an impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol, citing his brief imposition of martial law as a violation of democratic principles.
The motion, led by the main opposition Democratic Party and supported by five other parties, is set to be voted on by Friday, according to foreign media reports.
Facing widespread political pressure, President Yoon lifted martial law in the early hours of Wednesday, allowing military forces to return to their barracks. The controversial declaration had led to the military encircling the parliament, which quickly acted to denounce and overturn the measure.
National Assembly Speaker Won Shik condemned the martial law as unconstitutional, vowing to protect democracy alongside the people.
Opposition leaders have called the president’s actions a betrayal of the nation, demanding his resignation even after the withdrawal of martial law. They insist that such a move has severely undermined public trust and democratic governance in South Korea.
