South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol has announced the country’s willingness to ramp up military assistance to Ukraine if Russia and North Korea persist in their collaborative military ventures. Speaking to the EFE news agency, President Yoon emphasized the gravity of the situation: “If they do not cease their dangerous military operations, we are prepared to take appropriate and effective measures, including enhancing assistance to Ukraine, in cooperation with our allies and like-minded countries.”
The president expressed significant concern over reports suggesting that North Korean soldiers may be involved in Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine, calling it a global security risk. He highlighted that the exchange of military technology between Moscow and Pyongyang is particularly troubling, as it could grant North Korea critical insights into modern warfare, despite having little combat experience over the past 70 years.
Back on October 24, Yoon had indicated that South Korea might reconsider its stance on supplying lethal weapons to Ukraine, showing openness to a more adaptable approach. While direct arms exports to Kyiv remain unlikely, South Korean media have hinted at potential indirect channels for supplying munitions through allies like the United States. Moscow, however, has warned that such actions would severely impact diplomatic relations with South Korea.
Addressing the reported satellite imagery from Seoul that allegedly shows North Korean troops in Russia, President Vladimir Putin acknowledged the claim but pointed out that NATO has long been actively involved in Ukraine. He noted that the Russia-North Korea strategic treaty encompasses defense cooperation.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova downplayed the concerns, stating that the partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang is routine and non-provocative. She underscored that those invested in peaceful relations with Russia have no reason for alarm, despite Western narratives seeking to portray the alliance in a negative light.
