South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol has formally apologized to the nation after his attempted imposition of martial law threw the country into a political crisis and sparked calls for his impeachment.
In a brief televised address, Yoon described the martial law declaration as an act of desperation. “As the ultimate authority responsible for state affairs, I deeply regret my actions and sincerely apologize to the citizens who were shocked by this decision,” he said.
Yoon acknowledged the distress caused by his actions and stated he would take full responsibility. “I will not shy away from the legal and political consequences of my decision,” he remarked, as the impeachment vote looms in Parliament this weekend.
In response to speculation about a repeat attempt, Yoon firmly denied the possibility. “There will be no second attempt at a constitutional amendment,” he assured.
He concluded his address by committing to work with his party to restore political stability and apologizing once more to the public for the turmoil. Bowing before stepping off the podium, Yoon’s gesture marked an effort to rebuild trust amid an increasingly fraught political landscape.
