South Korea’s Constitutional Court to Rule on President Yoon’s Impeachment on April 4
South Korea’s Constitutional Court will deliver its ruling on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol on April 4 at 11:00 a.m. local time. The highly anticipated decision will be broadcast live, as confirmed by the court on Tuesday.
Authorities are preparing for mass protests, with police issuing the highest-level emergency order. Approximately 20,000 riot police officers from 338 units will be deployed across the country, including 14,000 in Seoul, where the court is located. Detectives will be stationed inside the court, while police commandos, paramedics, and ambulances will be on standby to handle potential disturbances.
Yoon’s impeachment process began after he declared emergency martial law on December 3, 2024. The opposition-led National Assembly revoked the law within hours and later passed an impeachment motion on December 14. Since then, the Constitutional Court has conducted 11 hearings on the case.
On January 15, Yoon was apprehended at the presidential office and later indicted under detention on January 26 as a suspected ringleader of an insurrection, making him the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested and prosecuted. He was released on March 8 after prosecutors chose not to appeal against the court’s decision.
With the final ruling approaching, heightened security measures and public demonstrations are expected as South Korea awaits a historic decision on its leadership.
