Sudanese Military Plane Crashes into Residential Building, 19 Dead Including Senior Officers and Civilians
A Sudanese military transport aircraft crashed into a residential building in Omdurman, the capital’s twin city, killing at least 20 people, including senior military officers and civilians.
According to local media reports, the incident occurred on Tuesday, triggering a massive explosion that was heard across the area. The Sudanese Ministry of Health confirmed that 19 bodies have been recovered and that search operations continue as more victims may be trapped under the rubble.
Among the deceased is Major General Bahar Ahmed, the former commander of the Khartoum Military Zone.
Military sources attributed the crash to a technical failure, which caused the aircraft to lose control before hitting the residential area. Witnesses reported seeing the rear section of the plane on fire before it went down. The crash also led to power outages in some surrounding neighborhoods.
The incident occurred just a day after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claimed to have shot down a Sudanese military plane in Nyala, South Darfur. The RSF reported that the aircraft burst into flames upon impact, resulting in the loss of all onboard.
As Sudan continues to grapple with political and military tensions, this tragic crash has further highlighted the volatile situation in the country.
