Taiwan – Super Typhoon Ragasa has wreaked havoc across East Asia, leaving at least 17 people dead in Taiwan and Hong Kong, while forcing mass evacuations and shutdowns across southern China as the storm slams into the Guangdong coast.
In Taiwan, torrential rains caused a decades-old lake barrier to burst in Hualien County, killing at least 17 people and injuring 18 others. Meanwhile, in Hong Kong, hurricane-force winds toppled trees, flooded streets, and smashed through buildings. Videos shared online showed storm surges shattering the glass doors of luxury hotels and flooding residential estates.
Authorities said more than 760 residents sought shelter in temporary centers as the city’s highest-level typhoon warning remained in place. Train services were largely suspended, hundreds of flights were canceled, and parts of the city’s power grid were shut down as a precaution.
China’s Ministry of Emergency Management confirmed that Ragasa was making landfall between Zhuhai and Zhanjiang, with tens of millions affected across Guangdong Province.
Officials ordered schools and businesses closed in at least 10 major cities, while 400,000 residents were evacuated in Shenzhen alone. High-rise residents in Zhuhai were told to move to safer locations, including nearby hotels.
China’s marine authority also issued its highest red wave warning, marking the first such alert this year, with storm surges expected to exceed 3 meters in some coastal areas.
The super typhoon also battered the northern Philippines, where at least two fatalities were reported. In Macau, widespread flooding forced authorities to cut power in low-lying areas.
Scientists have long warned that climate change is intensifying storms, making events like Ragasa more frequent and destructive. Hong Kong officials compared the typhoon’s strength to the devastating super storms of 2017 and 2018, which caused hundreds of millions in damages
Tragedy struck in Hong Kong’s Chai Wan district, where a five-year-old boy and his mother were swept into the sea while watching the waves. Both remain in critical condition, while the boy’s father, who attempted to rescue them, is also hospitalized.
Residents across the region described scenes of chaos and anxiety. “I’m quite nervous about losing power and water,” said Terence Choi, a Hong Kong resident who stocked up on supplies. In coastal neighborhoods, government workers scrambled to place sandbags to mitigate flooding.
