Tajikistan Hosts Global Glacier Conference to Address Climate and Water Crisis
Report by Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
Dushanbe, Tajikistan – The High-Level International Conference on Glacier Preservation officially opened in Dushanbe on May 29, 2025, bringing together world leaders, climate experts, and international organizations to address the rapidly escalating threat of glacier loss due to global warming.
The three-day event, hosted by the Government of Tajikistan, is being organized in collaboration with the United Nations, World Meteorological Organization (WMO), UNESCO, and other key international bodies. The conference is focused on preserving glaciers, managing water resources, and formulating global responses to the climate crisis.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is among the top leaders attending the conference, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to environmental sustainability and regional cooperation on water security. Pakistan, with its vast glacial reserves in the north, is highly vulnerable to the impact of melting glaciers.
Experts at the summit are sounding the alarm over the dramatic retreat of glaciers worldwide. Scientific reports warn that if current climate trends persist, nearly half of the world’s glaciers could disappear by 2100, leading to severe consequences for water supply, agriculture, and ecosystems across multiple continents.

Participants are discussing strategies to enhance glacial monitoring systems, strengthen regional data sharing, and implement sustainable water management practices. The conference is expected to conclude with the adoption of a Dushanbe Declaration, laying the groundwork for global cooperation on glacier protection and resilience-building.
This international effort underscores the urgent need for unified action to preserve glaciers and safeguard the future of water for millions of people across the globe.
