The Taliban is facing significant criticism in Iran for not standing during the playing of the national anthem at a recent official event, adding to the backlash they received in Pakistan.
Representatives of the Taliban stationed in various countries have come under scrutiny for their lack of respect for national anthems. This criticism intensified after an incident in Peshawar, where the Afghan chargé d’affaires did not stand for the anthem, and similar behavior was noted in Tehran.
Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Afghan chargé d’affaires to express strong objections to this “unacceptable” conduct following the Islamic Unity Conference. Reports indicate that Taliban envoy Sheikh Azizur Rahman Mansoor did not rise when the Iranian national anthem was played, unlike other attendees.
Iranian media highlighted the ministry’s protest, emphasizing the importance of respecting national symbols by diplomatic representatives. This incident complicates the Taliban’s diplomatic standing as they navigate their international relationships.
