Tanzania’s CHADEMA Barred from 2025 Elections Amid Treason Charges Against Party Leader
Tanzania’s top opposition party, CHADEMA, has been officially disqualified from participating in the October 2025 general elections, the country’s Independent National Elections Commission (INEC) confirmed Saturday. The move follows the party’s refusal to sign the mandatory electoral code of conduct, a requirement for all contesting political parties.
Ramadhani Kailima, Director of Elections, announced that CHADEMA’s non-compliance automatically invalidates its eligibility for upcoming national and local elections, including by-elections through 2030.
Tensions Escalate After Treason Charges Against Lissu
The disqualification follows closely on the heels of treason charges filed against CHADEMA’s leader, Tundu Lissu, a prominent opposition figure and former presidential candidate. Prosecutors allege that Lissu incited public rebellion aimed at disrupting the electoral process. The charges, which carry the death penalty, have drawn international attention. Lissu has not yet entered a plea.
CHADEMA Pushes for Electoral Reforms
Earlier on Saturday, CHADEMA had already declared its intention to boycott the electoral code signing ceremony, citing a lack of transparency and fairness in the existing electoral framework. The party has repeatedly called for major reforms, claiming the process heavily favors the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party.
Human Rights and Democratic Integrity Under Scrutiny
President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration faces mounting criticism over alleged suppression of political opposition. Human rights advocates have raised alarm over a series of enforced disappearances, targeted arrests, and extrajudicial killings involving opposition members. Although the government denies any involvement and has pledged to investigate the incidents, watchdog groups remain skeptical.
Despite the growing concerns, the ruling CCM maintains that human rights are respected, and the current electoral system is transparent and inclusive.
Political Fallout and Uncertain Road Ahead
The exclusion of CHADEMA, one of the country’s largest and most influential opposition parties, could significantly impact the credibility of the 2025 elections. As President Hassan seeks another term in office, the international community is expected to monitor developments closely.
CHADEMA has yet to release an official response to the INEC’s ruling but has reiterated its demand for a fair, inclusive, and reformed electoral process before participating in any future vote.
