LOS ANGELES, — Protests against large-scale immigration raids entered their second day on Saturday in the Paramount area of Los Angeles, as Border Patrol agents deployed tear gas to disperse demonstrators confronting federal enforcement operations.
The protests erupted after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained 118 individuals across the city on Friday, triggering widespread condemnation from activists and local leaders.
Outside an industrial park in Paramount, law enforcement officers in riot gear and gas masks stood guard while plumes of tear gas and smoke from burning debris filled the air.
The raids were carried out following federal warrants related to suspected use of false documents by employees at multiple business locations, including warehouses and retail chains. ICE said the actions were part of a broader effort to target undocumented individuals involved in alleged criminal activity.
In response to the escalating protests, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem warned demonstrators via social media.
Among those arrested during Saturday’s protest was David Huerta, regional president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). He is currently in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer condemned the arrest, demanding Huerta’s immediate release and accusing authorities of targeting Americans for exercising their constitutional rights.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass criticized the raids, saying they were designed to “sow terror” in immigrant communities. ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons pushed back, accusing the mayor of “choosing chaos over law enforcement.”
“ICE will continue enforcing federal immigration laws. Our mission will not be deterred by political theater,” Lyons said in a statement.
ICE confirmed that arrests also took place near local businesses, including outside Home Depot stores and a donut shop. Some demonstrators were seen vandalizing buildings with graffiti. Law enforcement blocked roads and deployed tear gas after some protesters kicked vehicles and attempted to prevent agents from withdrawing from the area.
