TEXAS: Devastating flash floods triggered by torrential rainfall have killed at least 32 people in the US state of Texas, with dozens more still missing as emergency crews scramble to find survivors.

Officials said 27 of the missing were children attending a local summer camp, raising fears the death toll could rise sharply.

One of the victims was identified as an eight-year-old girl described by her family as “living her best life.”

Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, with authorities warning that numbers of casualties may change as the day progresses. Helicopters and boats are being used to comb flooded areas where entire neighborhoods have been submerged.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of emergency in the hardest-hit regions, promising maximum support for ongoing relief operations.

“Our thoughts are with every family affected by this tragedy,” Abbott said. “Texas stands together in this moment of unimaginable loss.”

Meteorologists blamed a stalled weather system for releasing record-breaking rainfall across the state, overwhelming rivers and drainage systems. Communities from Houston to Austin reported widespread power outages, while schools and businesses were ordered closed for safety reasons.

Rescue teams are urging residents to stay away from floodwaters and to immediately report any missing people.
