Thailand and Cambodia Declare Immediate Ceasefire

Kuala Lumpur – Thailand and Cambodia have officially agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, ending several days of deadly clashes along their disputed eastern border. The agreement was reached on Monday during emergency peace talks hosted in Malaysia and chaired by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim under the ASEAN framework.

“An immediate ceasefire will come into effect from midnight, July 28, 2025,” Prime Minister Anwar announced after the talks concluded.

Violent hostilities broke out earlier this week after a Thai soldier was critically injured by a landmine in a long-contested border zone. The skirmishes quickly escalated, leading to the deaths of more than 30 people, including 13 Thai civilians and 8 Cambodians.

The fighting displaced over 300,000 residents, with 160,000 evacuated in Thailand and 140,000 in Cambodia, prompting international concern and urgent calls for restraint.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai both attended the negotiations and publicly welcomed the ceasefire deal. At a joint press conference, the two leaders shook hands and committed to working toward long-term stability.

“This agreement will help end the suffering and pave the way for dialogue,” said Hun Manet.
“We hope this moment marks a return to normalcy and renewed bilateral cooperation,” echoed Phumtham.

The ceasefire has drawn praise from the international community. U.S. President Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed the development, calling for strict adherence to the agreement.

> “President Trump and I commend both nations for their willingness to step back from the brink. The ceasefire must be respected fully,” said Rubio.

China also played a supportive role, encouraging both sides to resolve the crisis through diplomacy. A border summit will be held in Cambodia on August 4, where both nations will further discuss troop withdrawal and refugee resettlement.

The conflict had earlier triggered a diplomatic breakdown, with both nations withdrawing ambassadors and severing official channels. However, with the ceasefire in place, both sides have committed to restoring diplomatic ties and addressing unresolved issues in future summits.

A border summit will be hosted in Cambodia on August 4, where further de-escalation and refugee resettlement plans will be discussed.
