Thailand become the largest country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage

Thailand has become the largest country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, with hundreds of couples set to tie the knot on Thursday. While Thai society has long embraced gender diversity, legal protections had lagged—until now.

With the new law officially taking effect, same-sex couples will enjoy equal rights in marriage, including legal guardianship, inheritance, and property ownership. The legislation removes gender-specific terms like “husband” and “wife,” replacing them with “partner,” ensuring inclusivity.

With their upcoming marriage, the couple can re-register their property under both names, gaining access to joint mortgages and financial security.

Thailand’s progress on LGBTQ+ rights has been led in part by high-profile activists, including actors Apiwat “Porsch” Apiwatsayree, 49, and Sappanyoo “Arm” Panatkool, 38.
