Thousands Rally in Seoul to Support Ousted South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol
Massive demonstrations erupted in the South Korean capital on Saturday as supporters of former President Yoon Suk Yeol voiced strong opposition to his removal from office. Just one day after the Constitutional Court unanimously upheld his impeachment, crowds filled central Seoul, chanting slogans and calling for the decision to be overturned.
Yoon was dismissed on April 4 following a controversial attempt in December 2024 to declare martial law—a move the court said posed a “serious threat” to South Korea’s democratic order. His unprecedented ouster has plunged the nation into political uncertainty, with fresh presidential elections now set for June.
Undeterred by rainy weather, thousands of protestors gathered near key government buildings, holding signs that read “Restore Democracy” and “Cancel the Snap Election.” Many expressed concern that the court’s decision undermines democratic freedoms.
The backlash comes amid a deeply polarized political environment. During his presidency, Yoon’s hardline stance against perceived internal threats and his warnings about North Korean aggression drew strong support from conservative and nationalist groups. His supporters include prominent right-wing activists, religious leaders, and online influencers.
