TEL AVIV — Thousands of Israelis rallied in Tel Aviv on Saturday evening, reviving weekly demonstrations to demand that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu secure an immediate deal to release the remaining hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza.
This was the first major protest in three weeks, drawing renewed focus to the plight of roughly 50 Israelis still being held captive following months of conflict.
Former captive Liri Albag, one of five Israeli soldiers freed during a temporary ceasefire earlier this year, delivered an emotional address to around 2,000 protesters gathered at Hostages Square. Albag urged Netanyahu to show the same resolve he displayed against Iran in recent weeks toward finalizing a deal with Hamas.
“Over the past two weeks, all the headlines were about Iran. My brothers and sisters were pushed aside,” Albag said, referring to Israel’s recent 12-day war with Iran, which ended with a US-brokered ceasefire. “Fifty souls, 50 worlds — and it’s time to bring them back.”
Describing her time in Hamas captivity, Albag shared grim details of being disguised in Palestinian clothing, paraded through Gaza’s streets, and then locked with other women in a tiny underground cell measuring just two meters square.
“We were fed a quarter of a pita, a date, and half a bowl of rice a day,” she recalled. “Every second there is an eternity. This is the reality of the hostages.”
Albag directly appealed to Netanyahu and Donald Trump Now make a brave decision that ends the fighting in Gaza and brings back everyone… because that is our moral duty as a nation.”
Meanwhile, many in the crowd carried placards accusing Netanyahu of betraying national values and demanded the government prioritize a hostage deal over ongoing military operations.
Protest organizers have vowed to maintain weekly demonstrations until every hostage is freed and a long-term truce is secured.
