Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Protection Troops, has died in a blast in Moscow, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The explosion, reportedly triggered by an explosive device hidden in an electric scooter, occurred outside a residential building on Ryazansky Prospekt. Kirillov’s assistant was also killed in the incident.
Authorities have launched a criminal investigation, with initial reports pointing to a targeted attack.
The general had recently faced international scrutiny. Just a day before the incident, Ukrainian prosecutors charged him in absentia for deploying banned chemical weapons in Ukraine. In October, the UK sanctioned Kirillov for his alleged role in chemical weapons use.
Investigators are now probing connections between these allegations and the fatal explosion.
