Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada has strongly criticized India for its alleged interference in Canadian sovereignty, calling it a “horrific mistake.”
During a recent inquiry into foreign interference, Trudeau emphasized that the Indian government overstepped by attempting aggressive interventions within Canada. He stated, “We must ensure the protection of Canadians in light of these serious allegations.”
The Prime Minister’s comments follow the expulsion of six Indian diplomats, linked to accusations of India’s involvement in the assassination plot of a Sikh separatist leader. Trudeau highlighted that this incident points to a larger pattern of targeting Indian dissenters in Canada by the Indian government.
In his testimony, Trudeau expressed a desire to preserve the important relationship between Canada and India. However, he indicated that the assassination of Hardeep Singh has led to “clear and now increasingly evident” signals of India’s violations against Canada’s sovereignty.
He also noted intelligence suggesting that the Conservative Party may have been involved in or at significant risk of being part of these foreign interference attempts.
Earlier statements from Canadian police suggested that Indian diplomats allegedly worked with criminal networks to target Sikh individuals in Canada, a claim India has vehemently denied. Trudeau mentioned that concerns regarding these actions were first raised during the 2023 G20 Summit held in New Delhi.
As the situation develops, it underscores the rising tensions between Canada and India, posing questions about the future of their diplomatic relations and national security.
