Trump Administration Halts Key USAID Aid Programs in Middle East and Africa

The United States government has officially terminated several major USAID-funded humanitarian aid programs across the Middle East and Africa, according to multiple officials familiar with the decision. The move impacts critical food, healthcare, and education support for vulnerable communities in countries including Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Afghanistan.

The cancellations were directed by the Department of Government Efficiency, headed by Jeremy Lewin, following new policies under the Trump administration. Over 60 termination letters were reportedly sent last week, ending contracts with international aid partners such as the World Food Program (WFP).

Lifesaving Aid Cut Amid Regional Crises

The canceled programs were among the last remaining U.S.-funded projects providing lifesaving assistance. Impacted initiatives include food distribution in war-affected Yemen, support for Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon, and medical care for displaced populations.

A U.S. official confirmed that the aid was halted “for the convenience of the U.S. Government,” a standard clause allowing discretionary termination of federal contracts. Aid groups and local authorities are now warning of worsening humanitarian conditions as a result.

Educational Programs for Afghan Women Also Affected

Among the canceled projects is a Texas A&M University-led initiative that enabled young Afghan women to pursue education abroad. The program had gained bipartisan support in Congress, but students are now at risk of being sent back to Afghanistan, where women face increasing restrictions under the Taliban.

Broad Impact on Global Relief Efforts

The World Food Program has confirmed that U.S. funding for key operations in Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria has been withdrawn. In Yemen, food supplies already positioned in distribution centers are reportedly at risk of going unused.

An official with the United Nations, speaking anonymously, said the cuts would most severely impact refugee communities and conflict zones, adding that “the humanitarian consequences could be catastrophic.”

Policy Shift Under Scrutiny

Despite earlier assurances from Secretary of State Marco Rubio that critical aid programs would remain protected, this decision marks a continued rollback of USAID operations. Critics argue that the dismantling of USAID risks damaging the U.S.’s global reputation and influence.

There has been no official comment yet from the State Department regarding the long-term implications of the move.
