Chequers, England — US President Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirmed the enduring “special relationship” between Britain and the United States, closing Trump’s historic second state visit to the UK with promises of economic growth and unity.
The joint press conference at Chequers emphasized cooperation on trade, investment, and security, while both leaders carefully navigated sensitive issues such as Gaza, Ukraine, Russia, and Palestine recognition.
The highlight of the visit was the unveiling of a £150 billion ($205 billion) US investment package into the UK, part of a wider £250 billion deal covering technology, finance, and energy sectors.
- Microsoft, Nvidia, and OpenAI pledged £31 billion ($42 billion) under a new technology pact.
- Blackstone committed an additional £100 billion ($137 billion) to UK projects.
Starmer said these deals would “light up the special relationship for years to come,” while Trump described the bilateral bond as “unbreakable” and “priceless.”
Despite the warm tone, foreign policy differences surfaced:
- Russia and Ukraine: Starmer, along with European leaders, has urged stronger pressure on Moscow. Trump, while voicing disappointment in Vladimir Putin, stopped short of announcing new sanctions. He instead criticized European nations still purchasing Russian oil.
- Palestine and Gaza: Starmer has pledged to recognize Palestine if Israel fails to reach a ceasefire in Gaza. Trump openly disagreed, saying: “I have a disagreement with the Prime Minister on that score, one of our few disagreements, actually.”
Both leaders avoided escalating disagreements, presenting instead a carefully managed image of partnership.
The press conference also saw questions about the late Jeffrey Epstein and the dismissal of former UK ambassador Peter Mandelson, but both Trump and Starmer avoided being drawn into controversy.
Trump denied knowledge of Mandelson, while Starmer reaffirmed his decision to remove him, saying: “Some information came to light last week … and I made a decision about it, and that’s very clear.”
Trump praised Starmer as a “tough negotiator” and celebrated the new trade agreements, while Starmer highlighted economic benefits such as jobs, growth, and lower living costs for UK households.
As Trump departed for Washington, Starmer emphasized that the UK remains a strong destination for US capital: “This partnership is about ensuring real benefits for our people and future generations.”
