Trump Announces 104% Tariffs on Chinese Goods Amid Escalating Global Trade Tensions

U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed the imposition of an unprecedented 104% tariff on Chinese imports, marking a significant escalation in an intensifying global trade conflict. The dramatic move, aimed at curbing the U.S. trade deficit, has drawn sharp criticism from Beijing, which vowed to retaliate with equal resolve.

The new tariffs will take effect Wednesday and include a 50% additional charge on top of the existing 54% levies, bringing the total up to 104% on targeted Chinese goods. Trump, who remains a central figure in American politics, claimed that “many countries” are now actively seeking to negotiate trade deals with Washington.

Beijing Responds with Defiance

In a strongly worded response, Chinese officials described the U.S. measures as “economic blackmail” and pledged to “fight to the end” to protect national interests. State media denounced the tariff hike as “naked extortion,” warning that the move will not go unanswered.

The Chinese government is reportedly preparing a new set of retaliatory tariffs and other countermeasures aimed at U.S. exports.

White House Defends Tough Stance

Trump’s press secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the administration’s aggressive trade policy, stating, “President Trump has a spine of steel, and America will not break under his leadership.”

The White House emphasized that the new tariffs are aimed at recalibrating global trade relations and protecting American jobs. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent echoed this sentiment, asserting that the levies are at their “maximum strategic level” and are expected to prompt several nations to initiate trade negotiations.

Global Backlash and Strategic Risks

While some allies have signaled a willingness to negotiate, others are warning of long-term damage to global trade. The United Kingdom, facing a flat 10% tariff on its exports to the U.S., is seeking a new bilateral agreement to avoid further disruptions.

However, China took a firmer stance, sharing a historic video of Ronald Reagan denouncing tariff wars. Chinese state media framed the current standoff as a betrayal of global economic cooperation.
