The new tariffs will take effect Wednesday and include a 50% additional charge on top of the existing 54% levies, bringing the total up to 104% on targeted Chinese goods. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent echoed this sentiment, asserting that the levies are at their “maximum strategic level” and are expected to prompt several nations to initiate trade negotiations.

Global Backlash and Strategic Risks

While some allies have signaled a willingness to negotiate, others are warning of long-term damage to global trade. The United Kingdom, facing a flat 10% tariff on its exports to the U.S., is seeking a new bilateral agreement to avoid further disruptions.

However, China took a firmer stance, sharing a historic video of Ronald Reagan denouncing tariff wars. Chinese state media framed the current standoff as a betrayal of global economic cooperation.
