THE HAGUE — US President Donald Trump has stirred global debate by likening the recent American strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Addressing media at The Hague, Trump described the air campaign as a decisive, war-ending operation and dismissed reports suggesting minimal long-term damage to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
> “I don’t want to use the example of Hiroshima or Nagasaki,” Trump said, “but that was essentially the same thing that ended that war. This ended this war. If we hadn’t taken that action, they’d still be fighting.”
According to Trump, the operation involved the launch of 30 Tomahawk cruise missiles from a US submarine stationed approximately 400 miles away. He emphasized the precision of the strikes, stating each missile “hit within a foot” of its target, targeting key nuclear installations Iran had fortified against prior Israeli attacks.
> “This was a devastating attack,” the president added. “It knocked them for a loop. If it hadn’t, they wouldn’t have agreed to a ceasefire.”
Despite Trump’s confident assertions, early assessments from US intelligence agencies reportedly suggest otherwise. According to preliminary findings, the strikes did not fully destroy Iran’s nuclear enrichment capacity. The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) is said to have concluded that Iran’s uranium stockpiles and centrifuges remain largely intact, potentially setting the nuclear program back by only a few months.
Trump dismissed these claims, saying, “The intelligence was very inconclusive. It could’ve been very severe. That’s what the intelligence suggests. But I say it was obliteration.”
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also supported the president’s narrative, describing the damage as “moderate to severe” and criticizing leaks that downplayed the effectiveness of the attack.
> “Those leaks are completely false,” Hegseth said. “The portrayal of minimal impact undermines the facts on the ground and discredits our military’s successful operation.”
The FBI has reportedly opened an investigation into the unauthorized disclosure of classified intelligence related to the strikes.
The airstrikes, which reportedly targeted key Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, were executed in coordination with Israel following escalating tensions in the region. While Washington and Tel Aviv celebrated the mission’s precision, global reactions have been mixed, with some allies calling for restraint.
At a NATO summit this week, allied nations are expected to seek clarification on the long-term implications of the attack and the path forward to prevent further regional escalation.
Trump’s comparison to the Hiroshima bombing drew criticism from peace advocates and international observers who warned against inflaming tensions by invoking such historical parallels.
Nonetheless, Trump praised the precision of the military operation and its political results, crediting the ceasefire between Iran and Israel to what he termed a “strategic knockout.”
“Those pilots should be honored. They delivered a perfectly executed mission,” he said.
