Newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump has strongly condemned outgoing President Joe Biden for using his executive powers to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, in cases involving firearm purchase violations and financial fraud.
In a sharp statement, Trump questioned whether Biden’s decision would extend similar leniency to individuals prosecuted for the January 6 Capitol riots. “Will Biden’s pardon for his son also cover the Americans unjustly detained for the events of January 6?” Trump remarked, adding, “For years, many citizens have been held hostage under these accusations. Will they receive justice as well?”
Trump accused Biden of hypocrisy, pointing out the president’s earlier assurances that he would not use his authority to intervene in his son’s legal troubles. “He repeatedly promised not to pardon his son but reversed course before leaving office,” Trump said.
The January 6, 2021, attack on Capitol Hill remains a contentious chapter in American politics. Trump, who refused to accept the results of the 2020 election, delivered a fiery speech that day, after which his supporters stormed the Capitol. The riot resulted in multiple deaths, injuries, and significant property damage.
Several of Trump’s supporters have faced trials and convictions for their involvement. Trump’s comments reflect his ongoing grievance over what he considers the unjust treatment of those implicated in the riots.
Biden’s pardon of Hunter Biden has sparked widespread political debate, with Trump and his allies framing it as a misuse of executive authority. As Trump prepares to assume office, his remarks hint at a potential reevaluation of cases tied to the Capitol riots, signaling a new chapter in the polarized U.S. political landscape.
