WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump has openly disagreed with his intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard’s assessment that Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons, reigniting debate over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions as the Iran-Israel conflict enters its ninth consecutive day.
In remarks made on Friday, Trump rejected Gabbard’s statement issued earlier this week in which she claimed U.S. intelligence had found no concrete evidence that Iran is developing nuclear weapons. “I think Tulsi is wrong. Iran has long been working on nuclear capability — we should not be fooled,” Trump told reporters.
The disagreement marks a rare public rift between the president and his current director of national intelligence, as global powers monitor the escalating war in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, foreign ministers across Europe have urged Iran to return to the negotiating table with the United States regarding its nuclear program. The diplomatic pressure comes amid growing fears that further military action could lead to a regional crisis.
The calls follow the latest wave of missile strikes exchanged between Israel and Iran, with both sides showing little sign of de-escalation. Diplomatic sources say backchannel efforts are underway, though no breakthrough has yet been achieved.
Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), issued a strong warning on Thursday, cautioning Israel against launching any attacks near Iranian nuclear sites. He urged all parties to avoid further escalation, warning of “unimaginable consequences” if nuclear infrastructure is targeted.
Grossi emphasized the importance of restraint and transparency, calling on Iran to cooperate fully with international inspections and on Israel to respect global non-proliferation norms.
As the conflict intensifies, the UN Security Council is set to hold an emergency session to assess the deteriorating situation. UN officials confirmed that both Iran’s nuclear activity and the humanitarian fallout of the war will be on the agenda.
