Trump Moves to Label Antifa as Terrorist Group After Charlie Kirk Assassination

Report by “Safarti Tarjuman” International News Desk

Washington- U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to designate the antifa movement as a “terrorist organization” following the assassination of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, reigniting debate over political violence and free speech in America.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump said he was moving to classify antifa as a terrorist entity and urged investigations into its financial supporters.

“I will also be strongly recommending that those funding ANTIFA be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the highest legal standards and practices,” he stated.

The announcement comes as prosecutors in Utah filed charges against 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, accused of killing Kirk. Authorities, however, have not linked Robinson to antifa or any outside group, and his motives remain unclear.

Experts noted that Trump’s move may carry limited legal weight since antifa is not a centralized organization but a loosely connected movement with no leadership structure. Previous attempts to label it a terrorist group in 2020 faced strong legal hurdles, raising concerns over constitutional protections of free speech and association.

Despite these challenges, the White House is reportedly preparing an executive order on political violence and hate speech, aiming to expand federal tools against groups it views as extremist.

Vice President JD Vance, speaking to Fox News, echoed Trump’s position, blaming “left-wing radicalization” for creating an atmosphere that led to Kirk’s killing. He pledged that funding networks behind “left-wing violence” would be targeted under anti-terrorism frameworks.

Critics, however, argue that Trump is exploiting the tragedy to clamp down on political opponents. Civil liberties groups warn that conflating ideology with terrorism could set a dangerous precedent.

Trump first floated the idea of designating antifa as a terrorist group in 2020, amid nationwide unrest following the killing of George Floyd. At the time, legal scholars dismissed the proposal as unenforceable and unconstitutional.

The White House has not yet provided details on how Trump’s new designation would be implemented.
