U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly open to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s proposal to host a trilateral peace summit in Turkey with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to the White House.
Responding to Erdoğan’s initiative, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump is willing to attend if both the Russian and Ukrainian leaders agree to sit down together. She emphasized that Trump supports diplomatic efforts but insists any talks must involve direct engagement from both sides.
President Erdoğan renewed his offer to host the high-stakes summit, positioning Turkey as a neutral venue for dialogue amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Earlier in the day, delegations from Moscow and Kyiv met in Istanbul, though the talks yielded little progress beyond humanitarian arrangements.
The latest round of negotiations lasted just over an hour and led to agreements on the exchange of deceased soldiers and the establishment of a mechanism to swap seriously wounded personnel. However, no breakthroughs were made on key political or military issues.
According to documents published by Russian state media, Moscow’s demands include Ukraine’s full military withdrawal from four contested regions—Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson—along with recognition of Crimea as Russian territory. The Kremlin also opposes Ukraine’s NATO membership and insists on making Russian an official state language.
Ukraine presented a list of 400 children allegedly abducted and taken to Russia. The Russian delegation agreed to work on returning just 10 of them.
Russia’s chief negotiator Vladimir Medinsky proposed a two to three-day localized ceasefire to recover fallen soldiers, though Ukraine had earlier pushed for an unconditional nationwide ceasefire, which Moscow declined. Erdoğan expressed optimism about facilitating a three-way summit, highlighting Turkey’s strategic position as a diplomatic intermediary with strong ties to both Moscow and Kyiv.
