President Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles following widespread protests sparked by aggressive immigration enforcement operations. The move has drawn sharp criticism from California leaders, who accuse the federal government of inciting chaos and overreach.
California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the deployment as “purposefully inflammatory,” warning it would “only escalate tensions.” In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Newsom accused the federal government of attempting to seize control of the California National Guard without just cause.
“This isn’t about a law enforcement shortage—it’s about creating a spectacle,” Newsom wrote. “They want chaos. Don’t give it to them.”
Tensions first erupted on Friday after federal immigration officers launched coordinated raids at multiple locations in downtown Los Angeles, resulting in 118 arrests. Protests grew more heated on Saturday when ICE extended operations into Paramount, a largely Latino community, where demonstrators clashed with riot police and border agents.
Protesters and law enforcement exchanged teargas canisters, while some hurled projectiles and Molotov cocktails. Authorities confirmed multiple injuries among protesters and officers, over a dozen arrests, and two assaults on deputies.
Governor Newsom accused Trump of “sowing chaos” and warned of authoritarian overreach: “The federal government is taking over the California National Guard — not because law enforcement is overwhelmed, but because they want a spectacle.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass echoed those concerns, saying her administration is in direct contact with local and federal officials.
Paramount Mayor Peggy Lemons, meanwhile, said no active raids had taken place in her city and attributed the chaos to public fear and poor federal communication.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended Trump’s actions, citing “riots and lawlessness” and blaming California Democrats for failing to protect citizens. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said troops were being mobilized “IMMEDIATELY,” warning that active-duty Marines could be deployed if violence escalates.
Trump’s memo accused protesters of obstructing law enforcement and labeled the unrest a “rebellion” under federal law.
