WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the repositioning of two nuclear submarines to undisclosed regions, cautioning that recent remarks by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev could signal more than just posturing.
“I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump stated Friday via social media. “Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances.”
Although Trump did not specify whether the vessels are nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed, nor did he reveal their destination, the announcement reflects rising military and diplomatic unease amid renewed tensions with Moscow.
The move comes as Washington intensifies pressure on Russia to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine. Trump had initially set a 50-day deadline, now reduced to 10 days, with that window set to expire next week.
Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has been dispatched to Moscow to negotiate terms, and economic sanctions are on standby should talks fail to yield results.
The deployment of submarines — a key element of America’s nuclear triad — serves as both a deterrent and signal of readiness, military analysts suggest.
The submarine repositioning follows a sharp online exchange between Trump and Dmitry Medvedev, who now serves as Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council and is known for his inflammatory anti-Western rhetoric since the war in Ukraine began in 2022.
On Thursday morning, Trump labeled Medvedev a “failed former President of Russia” and warned him to “watch his words.” Medvedev swiftly retorted, writing, “Russia is right on everything and will continue to go its own way.”
Earlier this week, Medvedev accused Trump of engaging in a “game of ultimatums,” warning that Russia possesses Soviet-era nuclear capabilities and reminding the U.S. president that each new threat only pushes the two powers closer to direct conflict.
Serving from 2008 to 2012, Medvedev was once considered a progressive voice in Russian politics. Today, however, he plays a key role in the Kremlin’s national security policy, often using social media to launch veiled nuclear threats and mock Western leaders.
Observers say his rhetoric is largely aimed at appeasing hardliners in the Russian military establishment and reinforcing allegiance to President Vladimir Putin.
Earlier this month, after Trump promised new arms supplies to Ukraine and floated fresh tariffs on Moscow, Medvedev sarcastically commented.
