Washington — U.S. President Donald Trump has revealed plans for a second round of high-level peace negotiations involving Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and possibly several European leaders, shortly after his upcoming Alaska summit with Putin.
Speaking to reporters before leaving for Alaska, Trump expressed optimism about the first meeting but stressed that the follow-up talks could prove more crucial.
> “The second meeting will be more important. It will include Zelenskyy, possibly someone from Europe, and of course President Putin,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
Trump suggested holding the second meeting “very quickly” after Alaska, potentially in the same location for logistical ease.
This is the first time Trump has publicly signaled that European leaders could be invited to join the peace process, adding a multilateral dimension to the U.S.-led mediation efforts.
Addressing criticism that meeting Putin could be seen as rewarding him, Trump responded:
“President Putin would like to have a deal. Without me, he would take over all of Ukraine. But I am president, and he’s not going to mess with me.”
While Trump has long insisted the war would not have started under his leadership and that he could end it “within a day,” his recent rhetoric reflects growing impatience with Moscow. He condemned Russian strikes on Ukrainian civilians and warned of “severe consequences” if such attacks persist after the Alaska summit.
On Thursday, Zelenskyy held a virtual summit with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other European leaders to reaffirm Kyiv’s stance that no peace talks should exclude Ukraine.
Following the call, Zelenskyy said that both the Alaska meeting and the follow-up session should prioritize a ceasefire.
“President Trump told me this is one of his priorities when speaking to President Putin,” Zelenskyy said. “I hope some agreement can be reached, as previous talks with Putin have only resulted in more troops and intensified attacks.”
Merz said European leaders are working jointly to guide the Alaska meeting in a constructive direction, underscoring the need for coordinated diplomatic pressure.
