President Donald Trump has officially ended his relationship with billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, warning of unspecified “serious consequences” if the Tesla and SpaceX CEO supports Democratic candidates opposing a key Republican tax and spending bill.
Speaking from Bedminster, New Jersey, Trump told NBC News in a phone interview that he has no interest in mending ties with Musk, a former ally and top Republican donor. When asked if the relationship was over, Trump replied, “I would assume so, yeah,” adding, “I have no intention of speaking to him.”
The fallout comes after Musk criticized the GOP-backed tax bill, describing it on social media as a “disgusting abomination.” His comments have added tension as Republicans work to push the bill through Congress, where they hold slim majorities in both chambers.
Despite the escalating dispute, Trump said he has not considered terminating existing U.S. government contracts with Musk’s companies, including SpaceX and Starlink, which play key roles in national satellite infrastructure and space operations.
While Trump issued a vague warning of “serious consequences” should Musk financially back Democratic opponents of the bill, he provided no details about what actions might be taken.
In a parallel development, Musk called for the formation of a new centrist political party to represent the “80% in the middle,” signaling a growing disillusionment with both major parties. The tech billionaire’s political realignment could reshape donor dynamics heading into the 2026 midterm elections.
Despite Musk’s opposition and concerns from fiscal conservatives, Trump said he is confident the bill will pass the Senate before the July 4 Independence Day holiday. “People that were going to vote for it are now enthusiastically going to vote for it,” he claimed.
Republican lawmakers have largely remained loyal to Trump’s second-term agenda, with no major defections reported on votes related to his policy or cabinet nominations.
