WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump expressed strong dissatisfaction on Friday with his latest phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the war in Ukraine, describing the exchange as “very unhappy” and suggesting tougher sanctions may be imminent.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “It’s a very tough situation. I told you I was very unhappy with my call with President Putin. He just wants to go all the way, just keep killing people, it’s no good.”
The president hinted that Washington might finally move forward with harsher sanctions on Moscow after holding back for the past six months in hopes of persuading Putin to de-escalate.
“We talk about sanctions a lot,” Trump added. “He understands that it may be coming.”
Meanwhile, Trump revealed he had a “very strategic call” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday, amid growing concerns in Kyiv over delays in U.S. military support. Zelensky earlier stated that both leaders had agreed to work on strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities following Russia’s largest drone and missile attack since the invasion began.
