Washington — U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, raising speculation that the summit could pave the way for a territorial compromise aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
Speaking at the White House, Trump hinted that a future peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv might include a swap of territories “to the betterment of both” nations, though he did not provide specifics.
The conflict, triggered by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has left tens of thousands dead and displaced millions, devastating large areas of eastern and southern Ukraine.
Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov confirmed that the meeting is scheduled for Alaska, noting the geographic proximity between the two nations across the Bering Strait. “It seems quite logical that such an important and eagerly awaited summit between the leaders of the two countries should be held in Alaska,” Ushakov said.
The last time Trump and Putin met was at the 2019 G20 Summit in Japan during Trump’s first term.
Despite the announcement, analysts remain doubtful that the meeting will yield an immediate breakthrough. Russia has rejected multiple ceasefire proposals and refuses to engage directly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a step Kyiv insists is essential for progress.
At peace talks in Istanbul last month, Russia demanded Ukraine withdraw from certain territories and abandon Western military aid — terms Ukraine has flatly rejected.
The Alaska talks could mark a pivotal moment in U.S.-Russia relations and the broader international push to end one of Europe’s most devastating conflicts in decades — but whether it delivers tangible peace remains to be seen.
