EDINBURGH — President Donald Trump announced Monday that he is drastically shortening the timeline for Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt military aggression in Ukraine. During a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Trump Turnberry in Scotland, Trump revealed that his previously issued 50-day ultimatum has now been reduced to 10 to 12 days.
“We’re not seeing any meaningful progress,” Trump said. “There’s no reason to keep waiting.”
The new deadline falls between August 7 and 9, and underscores growing urgency from Washington for Moscow to end its deadly campaign in Ukraine.
Despite mounting international pressure, Russia launched an overnight barrage of over 300 drones, alongside multiple cruise and ballistic missiles, targeting Ukrainian cities such as Kropyvnytskyi, where a fire department school was struck. Ukrainian emergency services responded to the damage, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian toll of the conflict.
Trump reiterated that “severe tariffs” and additional sanctions would be imposed if Russia fails to meet the new deadline. The proposed measures could include:
- Heavy tariffs on Russian goods
- Secondary sanctions on nations doing business with Moscow
- Broader restrictions on Russian access to global markets
“We’re looking at comprehensive economic action, and that includes targeting Russia’s trading partners,” Trump said, adding that a formal announcement is expected later Monday or Tuesday.
Trump’s demand follows weeks of stalled U.S.-led peace negotiations, with no tangible movement from the Kremlin. Western allies have grown increasingly concerned about civilian casualties and regional instability, particularly in light of Russia’s relentless bombing campaigns.
The shift in tone signals Trump’s desire to assert leadership in brokering peace in one of Europe’s deadliest conflicts since World War II.
