Trump’s Approval Rating Declines to 42% Amid Rising Criticism on Economy and Immigration
Report By Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
A recent poll shows a significant decline in U.S. President Donald Trump’s approval rating, as dissatisfaction with his administration’s handling of key issues like the economy and immigration continues to grow. As Trump approaches the 100th day of his presidency, public opinion reveals a shift in favorability.
The poll, conducted by The New York Times (NYT) and Siena College, revealed that Trump’s approval rating has dropped to 42%, while 54% of respondents expressed disapproval of his leadership. These findings reflect widespread concern across various policy areas, signaling potential challenges for the president moving forward.
Economic Policies Face Strong Backlash
The U.S. economy, a central issue in Trump’s 2024 campaign, has become a point of contention for many Americans. A significant portion of the electorate, 50%, believes Trump has worsened the economic situation, while just 21% feel he has improved it.
The trade sector, which has been embroiled in ongoing tariff disputes, also received criticism. The poll showed that 53% of participants view Trump’s trade policies negatively, while only 42% approve. Notably, 56% of respondents believe that tariffs imposed by the administration have “gone too far.” Additionally, a strong 68% of voters feel that the U.S. benefits most from trade with its allies.
Immigration Policies Draw Increasing Negative Sentiment
Trump’s immigration policies, one of his key campaign promises, are also under scrutiny. A majority of respondents, 51%, expressed disapproval of the administration’s handling of immigration, compared to 47% who viewed the policies positively. Of particular concern were incidents in which the Trump administration mistakenly deported immigrants, with 52% of respondents criticizing the government’s lack of effort to repatriate them.
Rising Calls for Limiting Presidential Powers
The poll also indicated that many Americans are calling for restrictions on the president’s authority. 61% of respondents agreed that Trump should not have the power to impose tariffs without congressional approval, while 54% believed that Trump should not have the authority to unilaterally eliminate programs established by Congress.
Voter Sentiment on Trump’s Leadership
The survey results suggest that a growing number of voters, including those who initially supported Trump, describe his first three months in office as chaotic and unsettling. According to the NYT’s analysis, many Americans feel that the president does not fully understand the challenges they face in their daily lives, which has contributed to the negative evaluation of his leadership.
The poll, conducted from April 21 to April 24, surveyed 913 national voters and provides a snapshot of public opinion as Trump nears the significant milestone of his first 100 days in office.
