Celebrations of Paris Saint-Germain’s historic Champions League victory turned violent across France, leaving two people dead, hundreds injured, and more than 550 arrested, prompting fierce political debate and national condemnation.
French police reported that a 17-year-old boy was fatally stabbed during street festivities in the southwestern city of Dax. Separately, a man in Paris died after his scooter was struck by a car amid the post-match unrest. Authorities have launched investigations into both incidents.
The Champs-Élysées, a traditional gathering point for fans, became a scene of chaos as crowds clashed with riot police. Officers used tear gas and pepper spray after flares, fireworks, and projectiles were thrown. Riot police responded to widespread vandalism, including the torching of 264 vehicles and 692 reported fires.
The French interior ministry reported that 192 civilians and 25 emergency responders were injured during the riots. Among them, a police officer in Normandy suffered critical eye injuries from fireworks and was placed in an induced coma.
The violence sparked political controversy across the spectrum. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau condemned the rioters, calling them “barbarians,” while left-wing politicians criticized the heavy-handed police response. La France Insoumise MP Antoine Léaument accused authorities of using “barbaric methods,” while far-right leader Jordan Bardella labeled Paris a “playground for thugs.”
Paris Saint-Germain issued a strong statement condemning the violence, urging fans to celebrate with “respect and responsibility.” Despite the turmoil, Sunday’s official victory parade on the Champs-Élysées concluded peacefully. President Emmanuel Macron, an Olympique de Marseille fan, was expected to host the team at the Élysée Palace.
Earlier in the day, French and Italian fans clashed in Munich before the final, disrupting rail services near Fröttmaning station. Stones were thrown and fans reportedly entered train tracks. Back home, over 5,400 police officers had been deployed across Paris to manage crowds watching the final at the Parc des Princes and other public venues.
