Two staff members of the Israeli embassy were shot and killed on Wednesday evening near the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., sparking condemnation from international and U.S. leaders. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that the suspect responsible has been apprehended.

The shooting occurred near the intersection of 3rd and F Streets NW, in an area that also houses a local FBI field office and the U.S. attorney’s office. According to Israeli officials, the victims were a young couple who were preparing to get engaged.

Suspect Arrested at the Scene

Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith stated that the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez, was seen loitering near the museum shortly before the attack. He reportedly shouted “Free Palestine” while in custody. Authorities confirmed that Rodriguez had no prior criminal history or known affiliations with extremist groups.

Global Condemnation

U.S. President Donald Trump responded to the attack by labeling it a hate-driven act, stating on Truth Social: “These brutal killings, clearly rooted in antisemitism, must end immediately. Radicalism and hatred have no place in our country.”

Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed grief over the loss and condemned the act of violence. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also issued a statement denouncing the attack and extending condolences to the victims’ families.

Embassy and Security Officials Speak Out

Tal Naim Cohen, spokesperson for the Israeli Embassy in Washington, confirmed the two staff members were attending a Jewish cultural event when they were shot at close range.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem pledged justice for the victims in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “We will ensure the individual responsible faces full accountability.”
