UK Expands ETA Entry Permit Scheme to European Travelers

Report by Ishrat Yasmeen

The United Kingdom has expanded its Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) scheme, requiring European travelers to apply for a €12 (£10) permit before entering the country.

The ETA is a pre-entry security measure aimed at enhancing border control and streamlining entry procedures for visitors. Initially rolled out for nationals from select countries, the scheme is now being extended to travelers from the European Union, European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland.

ETA Scheme Details:

✅ Cost: €12 (£10) per applicant
✅ Validity: Two years or until the traveler’s passport expires
✅ Processing Time: Typically within 48 to 72 hours
✅ Requirement: Mandatory for visa-exempt travelers, excluding UK and Irish nationals

Visitors from the EU, EEA, and Switzerland who are travelling to the UK for tourism, business, or short stays will need to apply for an ETA before departure. The system is similar to the US ESTA or the EU’s upcoming ETIAS system, set to launch in 2025.

The UK government aims to strengthen border security, prevent illegal immigration, and improve the efficiency of its entry process. The ETA does not replace visas but serves as an additional screening measure for visa-free travelers.

Travelers are advised to apply for their ETA well in advance to avoid delays in their travel plans.
