UK PM Keir Starmer and French President Macron Invited to White House for Urgent Ukraine Crisis Talks
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have been invited to the White House for high-level discussions on the war in Ukraine, following growing concerns over Donald Trump’s approach to the conflict.
The invitation comes after two emergency meetings in Paris this week, where EU and NATO leaders sought to form a united front against Moscow-Washington rapprochement. The White House confirmed that National Security Adviser Mike Waltz extended the invitation, acknowledging the European Union’s growing concerns about Trump’s stance on Ukraine.
The diplomatic move follows a controversial meeting between U.S. and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia, which excluded Kyiv, sparking fears that Trump may broker a deal unfavorable to Ukraine and European security. Tensions have escalated after Trump recently called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a “dictator”, urging him to act swiftly to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty.
While Macron and Starmer advocate for a stronger European role, Germany’s Olaf Scholz has resisted the idea of sending peacekeeping troops to Ukraine, calling it “highly inappropriate without a clear peace plan.” However, Starmer has suggested that the UK would consider troop deployment, signaling policy differences within NATO.
The upcoming Washington talks between Macron, Starmer, and Trump’s administration could reshape Western strategy on Ukraine, determining whether Europe will take a more independent military stance or align with Trump’s negotiation efforts with Moscow.
