UK, US Collaborating to Secure Lasting India-Pakistan Ceasefire and Dialogue: David Lammy
Report by Safarti Tarjuman Local Desk
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated on Saturday that the United Kingdom and the United States are working jointly to ensure a durable ceasefire between India and Pakistan, while also encouraging confidence-building measures and direct dialogue between the two nuclear-armed nations.
Speaking during an interview in Islamabad at the conclusion of his two-day visit, Lammy emphasized the importance of sustained diplomacy to prevent renewed escalation following last week’s violent flare-up.
Key points from Lammy’s statement:
- UK and US are committed to an enduring ceasefire between India and Pakistan
- Dialogue and confidence-building measures are being encouraged between the rivals
- Countries must honor treaty obligations, referencing India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty
- UK will continue working with Pakistan on counter-terrorism efforts
Lammy acknowledged the fragile nature of the current ceasefire, which was brokered through rapid international diplomacy, including efforts by Britain, the US, and other global actors. The ceasefire was reached on May 10 after both nations exchanged missiles during a period of high tension, triggered by a deadly attack in Kashmir.
Regarding India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, Lammy urged all parties to respect international agreements, warning of the risks such actions pose to regional stability.
On terrorism, he reaffirmed the UK’s continued cooperation with Pakistan, calling it a “terrible blight” on both the country and the region.
