Ukraine has accused Russia of orchestrating an “information and psychological attack” following the spread of fake warnings about a massive airstrike on Kyiv. The warnings, falsely attributed to Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, coincided with the temporary closure of the US Embassy in Kyiv and other European embassies, including those of Greece, Spain, and Italy.
The US Embassy announced its closure on Wednesday, citing “information of a potential significant air attack” on Ukrainian cities. However, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence dismissed the warning as a fabricated message designed to incite fear, claiming it contained grammatical errors typical of Russian disinformation efforts.
“This message is fake and contains grammatical errors typical of Russian information and psychological operations,” the agency stated on Telegram. It assured the public that no such intelligence had been issued.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry also addressed the closures and urged calm, stating that Wednesday’s threats were no different from the daily risks Ukrainians face. It emphasized that misinformation campaigns could amplify anxiety among the population.
“For over 1,000 days, the threat of shelling has been an unfortunate daily reality for Ukrainians,” the ministry noted, while urging residents to remain vigilant and respond to air raid alarms. Overnight, Kyiv experienced multiple air raid warnings as Russia continued its airstrikes on Ukrainian cities.
As the conflict endures, Ukraine has accused Russia of combining relentless military actions with disinformation strategies to destabilize public morale and create panic.
