Ukraine has claimed responsibility for the assassination of Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Nuclear Protection Forces, who was killed in a bomb explosion in Moscow, alongside his assistant.
The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) confirmed to Reuters that the operation was carried out as a targeted mission. “This was a legitimate military operation aimed at eliminating a key figure responsible for war crimes,” said an SBU official on condition of anonymity.
The bombing, which involved an explosive device hidden in a motorcycle, occurred outside an apartment complex on Ryazansky Prospekt. The attack has raised concerns about the vulnerability of Russia’s top military officials, even within the nation’s capital.
Kirillov had recently been charged by a Ukrainian court for deploying chemical weapons against civilians, and in October, he was sanctioned by the UK for his role in chemical warfare.
Russia has accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting high-profile military officials to undermine morale within its ranks. Moscow has vowed retaliation, stating that the “cowardly attack will not go unanswered.”
