United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has raised alarms about the ongoing conflict in Gaza, stating that no party appears to be interested in pursuing a ceasefire.
Speaking to foreign media, Guterres highlighted the dire situation, noting that both Israel and Hamas are unwilling to halt hostilities. “This is a war that must come to an end,” he asserted.
He warned that the conflict threatens to spill over into Lebanon, potentially creating another Gaza-like crisis.
Reports indicate that Guterres made these statements as both factions accused each other of being insincere regarding a ceasefire. Israel continues to introduce new proposals at each negotiation stage, while Hamas insists that discussions should adhere to a framework established by U.S. President Joe Biden and endorsed by the Security Council in June, criticizing the ongoing introduction of new proposals as counterproductive.
The conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 41,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, since it erupted last October, with Israeli airstrikes persisting without securing the release of hostages.
Tensions between Israel and Iranian-backed Hezbollah have also surged, with Israel launching significant attacks within Lebanon. Israeli Defense Minister has remarked on the conflict’s transition towards Lebanese territory.
Guterres has noted this escalation, pointing out Hezbollah’s recent rocket launch attempts into Israel. Hezbollah’s Deputy Leader, Naim Qassem, declared on Sunday that the group is entering a new phase of warfare against Israel, signaling an open confrontation.
