UN Confirms Over Two Million Syrians Return After Assad’s Ouster

Report by “Safarti Tarjuman” International News Desk

The United Nations has confirmed that over two million Syrians have returned home following the ouster of former President Bashar al-Assad in December, signaling a renewed sense of hope and stability amid Syria’s ongoing recovery from more than a decade of civil war.

According to UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, more than two million displaced Syrians — both refugees and internally displaced persons — have returned to their homes since Assad’s removal from power by Islamist factions on December 8. Grandi made the announcement during his visit to Lebanon, which hosts approximately 1.5 million Syrian refugees.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Grandi described the development as “a sign of hope amid rising regional tensions,” underscoring the importance of political solutions over further instability and forced displacement.

The fall of Assad, who ruled Syria through years of war, has reinvigorated hopes for peace and reconstruction. While many returnees are confronted with widespread destruction and damaged infrastructure, the end of his regime has opened the door for a potential international reconstruction effort.

With Western sanctions on Syria recently lifted, the new authorities are actively seeking foreign investment and humanitarian aid to support the rebuilding process. UN estimates reconstruction costs to exceed \$400 billion, underlining the massive scale of the task ahead

The UN refugee agency estimates that by the end of 2025, as many as 1.5 million Syrian refugees abroad and 2 million internally displaced persons could return to their communities, provided stability continues to improve.

Grandi’s remarks highlight a cautious optimism within the UN about Syria’s path forward. However, humanitarian agencies continue to stress the need for transparent governance, human rights protection, and long-term international cooperation to ensure durable peace.
