The United Nations has called on the Peruvian government to provide compensation to approximately 270,000 women and 22,000 men subjected to forced sterilizations during the 1990s.
A committee of experts, consisting of 23 members, stated that forced sterilization constitutes not just a crime but a crime against humanity, deserving of stringent penalties. In their report, the committee addressed the discriminatory campaign that occurred under the presidency of former ruler Alberto Fujimori.
This report follows written complaints from five women who detailed the severe physical and mental suffering they endured as a result of the forced sterilization procedures.
During the period from 1996 to 2000, Fujimori’s administration initiated a campaign aimed at controlling birth rates, which resulted in widespread disorder and compelled millions to flee to neighboring countries. The UN’s demand for reparations highlights the urgent need for justice and recognition of the extensive suffering inflicted upon these victims.
