UN Food Aid Trucks Raided in Gaza, Highlighting Aid Distribution Breakdown

Chaos erupted in Gaza as multiple United Nations food trucks were intercepted and looted overnight, underscoring the deepening crisis in distributing critical humanitarian aid to Palestinians trapped under siege conditions.

According to local residents and merchants, at least 20 food aid trucks operated by the UN World Food Programme were stopped by desperate civilians near midnight. Witnesses reported that the convoy was ambushed after rumors spread about the delivery route, with people placing makeshift barriers on roads and forcibly seizing supplies.

“Some trucks made it through initially, but word spread quickly. People intercepted them, blocked the road, and looted the goods,” said a Gaza resident via chat app, speaking anonymously due to the security situation.

The unrest follows a tense incident on Tuesday when large crowds stormed a food distribution site run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a U.S.-backed group recently approved by Israel to begin delivering aid under a new operational framework. Israeli forces responded by firing warning shots, injuring at least 47 people, according to the United Nations.

The new distribution plan, intended to bypass Hamas and deliver aid more directly, has drawn criticism from global relief organizations. UN agencies and other humanitarian groups have refused to participate, arguing that the system violates humanitarian principles by prioritizing political concerns over neutral, needs-based aid delivery.

Despite the chaos, Israel permitted 95 aid trucks—managed by the UN and international NGOs—to enter Gaza on Tuesday. However, security for the convoys remains fragile, especially as growing hunger drives civilians to extreme measures.

The growing humanitarian catastrophe has sparked renewed global condemnation of Israel’s blockade strategy, with international observers warning that the current aid system is unsustainable and could lead to mass starvation.
