UN Report: Women’s Rights Deteriorated in 25% of Countries in 2024
Women’s rights suffered setbacks in one-quarter of countries worldwide last year, according to a new UN Women report. Factors such as democratic decline, climate change, and global conflicts contributed to the erosion of gender equality.
Key Findings of the Report:
🔹 Democratic Backsliding & Gender Rights – Anti-rights movements are actively undermining progress on women’s rights.
🔹 Limited Political Representation – Female representation in parliaments has doubled since 1995, yet men still hold 75% of seats worldwide.
🔹 Workforce Inequality – The gender employment gap remains stagnant, with 63% of women in paid jobs compared to 92% of men.
🔹 Social Protection Gaps – While coverage improved, 2 billion women and girls still lack access to social protection benefits.
🔹 Rising Violence Against Women – Conflict-related sexual violence spiked by 50% in the last decade, with 95% of victims being children or young women.
Urgent Call for Action
The UN report highlights AI, climate crises, and global conflicts as new threats to gender equality. It urges investments in poverty reduction, gender violence prevention, and equitable access to technology to safeguard women’s rights.
