UN Reports 630 Aid Trucks Enter Gaza as Ceasefire Begins
The United Nations has confirmed that over 630 trucks carrying humanitarian aid successfully entered the Gaza Strip on the first day of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which began yesterday.
In a statement shared on social media, UN Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, highlighted the critical nature of the aid reaching Gaza. He explained that of the total trucks, at least 300 were sent to the northern regions of Gaza. Fletcher stressed the urgency of delivering aid swiftly, as the region has been grappling with severe humanitarian needs after months of conflict.
We cannot afford any further delays in assistance,” Fletcher said. His comments underscored the dire situation the Palestinian population faces, with millions struggling due to shortages of food, medical supplies, and basic necessities.
The ceasefire, which includes provisions for a prisoner exchange and a halt to hostilities, took effect at 11:15 AM local time yesterday. This agreement follows a prolonged conflict that began on October 7, 2023, resulting in significant casualties and widespread devastation in Gaza, where an estimated 2-3 million Palestinians have been enduring a critical food crisis.
As part of the ceasefire terms, it is anticipated that around 600 aid trucks will be arriving in Gaza each day to alleviate the dire situation and provide much-needed support to the population.
